They may not be the current kings of the game, but the thought of getting one over Kerry is something that supporters from every other county still relishes. On Sunday in Elverys McHale Park, Mayo will start their Allianz National Football League campaign looking to give those there in support of the green and red that very same satisfaction come full time, and set themselves up nicely to retain their division one status at the very least.

The Galway senior footballers kick start their National Football League campaign this Sunday when they face Derry in Pearse Stadium at 2pm.

Not for the first time in the past year the Sligo footballers had too much for Galway when a game was in the balance and was there to be won.

Mayo 0-10

Mayo will wrap up their whistle stop FBD League campaign on Sunday in Ballyhaunis when they face Roscommon in their third game in seven days. Following last Sunday’s defeat away to Leitrim, James Horan watched his side crush the challenge of a very poor GMIT side in Ballinrobe on Wednesday evening. There were some positives to take from the easy win according to the Ballintubber clubman. “There were a few good things, we were sluggish against Leitrim the last day and Leitrim punished us. I suppose we were a little bit better today and we’ll be a little bit better at training on Friday and next Sunday as we build up to the National League.”

The thousand or so souls who turned out in Flanagan Park in Ballinrobe on Wednesday evening will have left the south Mayo venue none the wiser as to what 2013 will hold in store for the Mayo senior footballers.

Alan Mulholland’s Galway footballers and Sligo, under Kevin Walsh, will face each other in the FBD League on Sunday in Enniscrone (2pm).

It was only a matter of weeks ago that the curtain came down on the club scene in Mayo for 2012 and now on the second Sunday in January, the curtain is coming back up on the inter-county season for 2013. While the members of last year’s senior squad enjoyed their well deserved team holiday in Miami last week and the early part of this week, this Sunday in Ballinamore is going to be a very different experience from the sun and sand of South Beach.

The Galway senior footballers will have their second competitive game of the season this Sunday when they face Sligo IT in round two of the FBD league in Tuam Stadium (2pm).
